Reason to Believe

Tue 6/28/2011 1:13 pm. Two Democrat governors have written puff political books with this title: Mario Cuomo (that’s Mario’s son who is the current governor of New York, the hero of homosexual marriage in our time) whose volume I had on my mantelpiece for years, as a memorial to political truth as we know it. ... But then this Patrick fellow (Massachusetts) shows-up with another! Probably a kind-of tribute to Cuomo, who gave a thrilling speech beloved by liberals everywhere at the 1984 Mondale/Ferraro convention. ... Patrick’s book has replaced the Cuomo rendition in my place of honor.

As far as I know, the phrase is the title of a popular Tim Hardin song about lying, the lyrics of which I reproduce below. Mr. Hardin unfortunately died in 1980 of a heroin overdose. I believe both politicos chose the phrase because it’s hip with the kids and it sounds like a nice thing. ... But it isn’t really. ... The tune is really sweet and haunting....

If I listened long enough to you
I’d find a way to believe that it’s all true
Knowing that you lied straight faced while I cried
Still I look to find a reason to believe

Someone like you makes it hard to live
Without somebody else
Someone like you makes it easy to give
Never thinking of myself

If I gave you time to change my mind
I’d find a way to leave the past behind
Knowing that you lied straight faced while I cried
Still I look to find a reason to believe

Someone like you makes it hard to live
Without somebody else
Someone like you makes it easy to give
Never thinking of myself

If I gave you time to change my mind
I’d find a way to leave the past behind
Knowing that you lied straight faced while I cried
Still I look to find a reason to believe
Still I look to find a reason to believe
Still I look to find a reason to believe
